The Magic of Childhood Dreams
Birthdays are special times. This year, instead of a big party and more toys, our daughter asked for a make-over for her bedroom with creations from The Painting Pony. She is very supportive of my art and entrepreneurial efforts and wanted to have her room redone using products her mom had made and designed.
The white walls had become a gallery of toddler doodles (she's now long, grown-out of the toddler age) and what better cure for that than a fresh coat of paint. She was in need of a make-over badly... paint, bedding, and organization.
The design of the room was light, airy, and whimsical. The room has unique nooks and crannies and an incredibly high ceiling with a dormer and an oversized window overlooking our pasture and a mountain view. With that in mind, I hoped to give it a dreamy, tree-house feel on a country horse farm.
Moving her to a spare room we set about making her dream bedroom a reality, using some fresh paint and products from The Painting Pony. We planned a collection from our patterns and products to give her room the much-needed face-lift she had asked for.
The bedding we chose to use is our Country Floral Horse Pattern, which we made in her favorite color purple from our new Spring 2018 collection. We included a soft, fleece blanket to add color and texture to the foot of the bed with pink and green colored horse shoes and clover flowers printed on it. A watercolor horse jump art lumbar pillow adorns the top of the horse jump bed that was hand-built by my husband to finish off the horse jump theme.
Whimsical trees were painted and reach up from both sides of her room into a cheerful blue sky painted on the ceiling. Barn swallows adorn leafy branches and fly about the room along with a few butterflies. Cedar fence boards were put on the walls behind her bed giving the impression of a country farm fence and provide a place to hang show ribbons and awards. Classic purple striped patterned blackout curtains, with fancy horse bridle details, frame-up the oversized window overlooking our farm. The curtain pattern is matched on the twin 16 inch equestrian pillows on the bed.
An antique dressing table, which had been passed down through four generations in my family, was given a make-over using some of our Horse Show Ribbons patterned fabric to sew a new skirt that hides inner shelves. A Spring Ponies Monogrammed Ottoman offers a comfy place to sit or prop your feet up on from the new window seat.
For an extra-special touch, we created a small memorial area for her beloved pony, Ginni, who sadly passed away last summer. To one side of her new window seat (which was designed to sit over three rustic metal baskets with storage space for toys, books, and other items) the memorial consists of a custom colored pencil head study hanging over her pink plaid stall name plate and a pretty pink hook holding her halter and lead rope. A life-sized wall mural of Ginni is also painted on one of the walls. I took a cute drawing my daughter had made of her new pony, Dixie, and had a pillow made with it, which turned out super cute and might be one of my favorite parts!
Purple Horse Bit Area Rugs in three different sizes help to break-up the large beige color of the carpet and add more color to the room. Coordinating and adorable throw pillows in different sizes add style and comfort to the window seat.
Our Daughter loves how her room turned out. It was a very Happy Birthday.

7. Galloping Horses Accent Pillow: Available in coral or purple colors to coordinate with your bedding colors.
8. Horse Show Ribbons Pillow: A 16" sized pillow adds some style and the varied size helps keep things interesting. It also repeats the pattern from the dressing table to tie it into the room's decor.
9. Country Floral Patterned Pillow: Our largest pillow on our window seat is 18" and helps tie in the bedding pattern to the window seat with the coordinating colors and matched pattern.
10. Spring Ponies Ottoman: Our room has the purple colored pouf and comes with a monogram of your initials. The top and bottom come in several different color options but custom colors can be done upon request too.
11. Cotton Fabric: 1-yard of our horse ribbons patterned crafting fabric available by the yard was used to create a fabric skirt on our vintage dressing table. This was a DIY project anyone who knows how to sew can do with any of the available fabric by the yard from The Painting Pony.
12. Horse Bridle Striped Pattern Curtains: Our bedroom uses the blackout style curtains. They also come in a sheer style and are sold per panel. Our room uses two panels on the main window and one panel over a closet instead of using a door. NOTE: The blackout style drapes will have a gray-tone due to the sun-blocking properties of the fabric while the sheer will be more true to color.
13. Horse Bits Patterned Area Rugs: Our bedroom utilizes 3 different rug sizes to add coordinated color to our floor. They help to break-up the plain, beige carpet color of the room. This rug comes in a few different colors, but can be made for you in others upon request.
14. Pink Plaid Horse Stall Nameplate: (not pictured above) Our memorial wall uses a stall plaque that had been hanging on our daughter's pony's stall. There are many different designs to choose from and custom colors are always available upon request.
15. Custom Art Portrait: (Not pictured above) A colored pencil head study was used on our memorial wall. Custom pet portraits are available in several different mediums and sizes and can come matted, ready for you to frame.
Design 101 - A Case Study on Bedroom Design.
We are smitten with our very first full-room collection of perfectly coordinated products for the most-dreamy equestrian inspired bedroom and are pleased to present it to you.
When putting together your own room, there are three simple things to keep in mind.
1. Choose colors:
Our room has one main color with two accent colors. We chose purple (for our discerning princess) along with pink and pale green as small accents.
2. Choose patterns:
- That coordinate. IE: stripes with floral prints.
- Add patterns in various sizes. Mix large and small patterns.
3. Choose Texture:
- Smooth cotton sheets
- Shiny (we chose glass, gem upholstery studs for our antique dressing table)
- Soft, velvety blankets
- Nubby textured rugs
- Rustic wood accents
Start with your main room inspiration piece and build upon that. We've used our Country Floral Horse Lover Bedding set as our base product for our first design example this season. Take note how the color purple is used in similar hues with a touch of different colors here and there that compliment each pattern.
Our Country Floral Horse pattern is available on all of our products. We recommend picking out items with different patterns mixing smaller patterns with larger ones in your chosen colors. Pick out patterns from different products to mix and match them from different collections. Mixing smaller patterns with larger, classic patterns (such as thick stripes) is always a good way to keep things from being too busy.
